Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), also known as Black Sage, is the common name for several species of aromatic plants in the genus Artemisia. Mugwort is a plant related to ragweed that has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb, as a tea, smudge or incense. Mugwort has powerful natural antimicrobial properties and used in many ways for its antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Medicinally, potential health benefits of mugwort include boosting energy and calming nerves, relieving digestive conditions, relieving itching and pain from insect bites and scars, promoting regular periods and reducing menstrual cramps. Mugwort is also used as incense for divination and as a smudge for relaxation and calm and for cleansing rituals.

Belonging to the mint family, Mugwort’s subtle, sweet scent can be described as having herbaceous, woody and earthy aromas. Mugwort has a distinctive sage-like smell, though a little sweeter.

SMUDGING

Smudging is an ancient ritual used to cleanse a person, place or objects of negative energies, spirits or influences. According to ancient knowledge, all plants possess a sacred transcendental spirit and smudging with smoke from dried herbs and plants providing a bridge to spirit. Cultures including Aboriginals, Native Americans, Balinese, Druids, Chinese, Maoris, Mayans and Zulus use smudging in ceremonies. The ritual of smudging with smoke can be used for cleansing or blessing - e.g. welcoming in the new day, or cleansing the body, home or workplace. Native American cultures traditionally used smudge sticks in spiritual ceremonies to remove negative energies and spirits. Legend has it that negative energies attach themselves to the smoke and leave, making way for good and helpful spirits.

Mugwort has a sweet aroma and often used for enhancing divination, dreams and for safe travel. Mugwort is useful in enhancing psychic abilities as it helps open the third eye chakra. Burning mugwort can be used for altering personal state and enhancing meditation practice - you may enter into a very foggy, trance-like state and it could make some tasks more difficult post smudging. Regarded as the traveller's friend, Mugwort can be used to promote physical wellbeing, endurance and protection. This herb can also encourage prophetic and happy dreams and act as an aid to astral travel. We encourage smudging with mugwort for anyone wishing to develop their conscious or lucid dreaming experience.

Warning: we advise against its use around pregnant women.

NB: Not all smudge is the same. Purity, integrity and sustainability matters.
