Bloodstone Geological Notes & Origins

Origins: Bloodstone (or Heliotrope) occurs mostly as Jasper or Chalcedony, and sometime both. Classic bloodstone is opaque Green Jasper with red inclusions of Hematite. Though some formations contain inclusions that are yellow or white (called plasma), while others lacking inclusions can be entirely green. 

Chicken blood stone, also known as “Ji Xue Shi” in Chinese, is a type of jasper only found in two locations in China. It is characterised by its distinct and captivating appearance and typically found in shades of deep red, maroon, and burgundy, often with intricate veins and patterns that resemble the splattering or flowing of blood - hence its name. Chicken Blood Stones are unique and highly prized gemstones and they are often used in jewellery making for their aesthetic appeal and durability as well as for intricately carved displays. In Chinese culture, chicken bloodstone symbolises power, protection, and life force.
