Bloodstone Geological Notes & Origins
Origins: Bloodstone (or Heliotrope) occurs mostly as Jasper or Chalcedony, and sometime both. Classic bloodstone is opaque Green Jasper with red inclusions of Hematite. Though some formations contain inclusions that are yellow or white (called plasma), while others lacking inclusions can be entirely green. Bloodstone is often hard to distinguish between Dragon's Blood Jasper - learn how to identify here.
Chicken blood stone, also known as “Ji Xue Shi” in Chinese, is a type of jasper only found in two locations in China. It is characterised by its distinct and captivating appearance and typically found in shades of deep red, maroon, and burgundy, often with intricate veins and patterns that resemble the splattering or flowing of blood - hence its name. Chicken Blood Stones are unique and highly prized gemstones and they are often used in jewellery making for their aesthetic appeal and durability as well as for intricately carved displays. In Chinese culture, chicken bloodstone symbolises power, protection, and life force.
African Bloodstone, often referred to as the “Martyr’s Stone” or simply “Bloodstone” (a variety of Chalcedony), is a dark green jasper primarily found in the Silica-rich regions of Africa, particularly in South Africa and the Savannah regions of the continent. It is characterised by its deep, earthy appearance, typically found in shades of forest green, olive, and dark emerald, punctuated by striking splatters, streaks, or spots of vibrant red to rust-coloured iron oxide inclusions. These red markings, which resemble drops or sprays of blood against a verdant backdrop, are the defining feature of the stone—hence its name.
Bloodstones from Africa are unique for their high contrast and the mystical “blood drops” that set them apart from other green chalcedonies. They are highly valued in the lapidary arts, frequently cut into cabochons for jewellery such as rings and pendants due to their durability and vitreous lustre, as well as being polished into worry stones or carved into talismans. Historically revered across many cultures—from ancient Babylonian warriors who used them to grant strength, to early Christians who associated them with the blood of Christ—African Bloodstone is widely regarded as a stone of courage, purification, and vitality.
Indian Bloodstone, also known as “Heliotrope” in historical texts, is a variety of dark green chalcedony jasper predominantly found in the regions of Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Deccan Plateau in India. It is characterised by its deep, opaque base—typically ranging from forest green to bluish-green—vividly contrasted by distinctive spots, streaks, or larger splashes of bright red to crimson jasper or iron oxide inclusions. Unlike the more scattered patterns seen in African varieties, Indian Bloodstone often displays well-defined, singular “blood drops” or clusters of red against a consistently dark green matrix, creating a visually striking and easily identifiable appearance.
Indian Bloodstones are prized for their high polish, hardness, and the clarity of their colour contrast, making them a favoured material for carved cameos, men’s signet rings, and traditional Mughal-era inlay work, as well as contemporary pendants and amulets. In Indian culture and classical gemmology, bloodstone has long been revered as a stone of vitality, courage, and purification. It is traditionally believed to enhance decision-making, protect against deception, and ground spiritual energy, earning it a lasting place in both Ayurvedic healing traditions and Western lapidary arts.
