Chalcedony Properties & Attributes

Origins: Technically, chalcedony is any form of microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz, (meaning any form of quartz whose crystals are too small to be seen without high magnification.) In common practice, only the translucent, single color types are sold as "chalcedony" whereas the rest of this group are sold under individual variety names, or as jasper or agate. While the definitions overlap, jasper usually refers to an opaque, solid colored stone. Agate is defined either by its translucency, or by having a pattern to its colours.

Chalcedony is a reflective and protective stone that encourages inward reflection and supports one in focusing on constructive thoughts and feelings - also facilitating forgiveness of self. It works by absorbing negative vibrations and energy, allowing it to dissipate to prevent onward transmission - making it very useful for dealing with negative thoughts and emotions. It helps create openness and enthusiasm, promotes friendship and goodwill, and instils feelings of benevolence and generosity.

Physically, Chalcedony is used to improve mineral absorption & increase physical energy & vitality. It is also believed to be healing for bones & the circulatory system.

Colours: This stone is characterised by its waxy lustre and can be semitransparent to translucent. Chalcedony can appear in a wide range of colours, including white, grey, blue, and brown, often enhanced through dyeing or heating. 

Varieties of Chalcedony include: Jasper, Agate, Onyx, Bloodstone, Carnelian, Chrysoprase, Pietersite, Chrysocolla Chalcedony, Chrome-Chalcedony, Sard, Binghamite, and Petrified Wood.

Stability, Care & Cleaning: Chalcedony is a harder gem - 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it may scratch and damage softer crystals or stones. Clean with mild detergent, warm water and soft brush are a good choice for cleaning, or wipe crystal jewellery with a clean, damp cloth and dry before wearing or storing.

Geological & Care Notes:

• Composition: A cryptocrystalline form of Silicon Dioxide (SiO₂). Its fine intergrowths of quartz and moganite create its smooth texture.

• Formation: Typically forms in volcanic and sedimentary environments, often as deposits in rock cavities.

• Care: With a hardness of 6.5-7, it is durable but can be scratched. Clean with mild soap and water. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, as some varieties (like Chrysoprase) can fade.
