Origins & Geology: Tektite's are pitted bodies of natural glass (non-volcanic). They are created when meteorites impact the Earth’s surface, melting surface material and hurling it thousands of meters or kilometres depending on the size of the meteorite and imact crater. They appear as gravel-sized to microscopic and area unusual and irregular. Depending on the nature of the local rock, the composition of tektites is variable, hence, many varietal names are given to tektites from different localities. They can be grouped into four strewn fields around the globe:
- Australasian strewn field - includes Australia, South East Asia and the Philippines; where tektite's appearance is very dark, mostly black and philippinite's are black.
- Central European strewn field - in Germany and the Czech Republic Moldavites appear bottle-glass green.
- Ivory Coast strewn field - Ghana where the Ivorites appear black.
- North American tektite strewn field - the United States has Bediasites from Texas that appear as black to dark brown (some with metallic finish), and the Georgiaites ftom Georgia appearing green.
