White sage (salvia apiana) is an evergreen perennial shrub native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It is the most sacred of all the smudging herbs, and for hundreds of years it has been considered a cleansing, purifying, and protective plant. Its Latin name, salvia apiana translates to 'healing plant' and it is widely used by Native Americans for its healing properties and for repelling all kinds of negative energy. The smudge stick is made by tieing bunches of fresh herbs and air drying in a dark and dry place for a period of time.
It belongs to the mint family, and its scent can be described as having herbaceous, woody and earthy aromas that are strong but not overwhelming. White sage scent is revered for its ability to purify, protect and elevate space.

Spiritual & Energetic Benefits
Purification & Cleansing: This is its most famous use. Dragon's blood smoke is believed to powerfully cleanse a space, object, or person of negative energy, psychic debris, or malevolent influences. It's often used after conflicts, before rituals, or to clear a new home.
Protection: It's considered a potent protective agent. Burning it is said to create a spiritual barrier, ward off curses, evil spirits, and negative intentions. Many keep a small piece of resin or use the incense for this purpose.
Amplification of Intent & Spellwork: In various magical traditions (like hoodoo, Wicca, and folk magic), dragon's blood is used as an "amplifier." It's believed to increase the potency of prayers, spells, or intentions when added to other incense blends or rituals.
Promoting Love, Courage & Strength: Associated with the "element of fire" and masculine energy, it's burned to enhance personal power, courage, willpower, and passion. It's also used in love spells, typically those aimed at increasing lust or passion.
Practical & Atmospheric Benefits
Grounding & Centring: Its rich, earthy, slightly sweet, and spicy aroma is deeply grounding. Many use it during meditation or moments of stress to feel more present, stable, and connected to the earth.
Focus & Mental Clarity: The act of preparing and burning the resin (often on a charcoal disk) can be a mindful ritual in itself. The scent helps some people clear mental fog, enhance concentration, and banish lethargy.
Insect Repellent: Anecdotally, the smoke from burning dragon's blood resin can help repel mosquitoes and other flying insects, similar to other aromatic resins like copal or frankincense.
Aromatic & Wellness Benefits
Uplifting Fragrance: Simply as an incense, it produces a luxurious, ancient, and complex scent that many find profoundly uplifting, comforting, and spiritually enriching. It transforms the atmosphere of a room.
Respiratory Support (Traditional Use): Important Note: This is a traditional claim, not a modern medical recommendation. In some ancient systems, the smoke was inhaled to soothe respiratory discomfort. However, burning any resin or incense produces particulate matter and should not be used as a medical treatment. Always consult a doctor for respiratory issues.
