The most obvious physical properties of serpentine are its green colours, mottled and  patterned appearance, and waxy (slippery) feel. There are several varieties of Serpentine, and visually specimens can occur with beautiful swirling, brecciated, or veined patterns ideal for lapidary (jewellery) use.

Found worldwide where ancient seabeds have been forced to Earth's surface by tectonic activity. Notable localities include: Italy, California, USA, Canada, Russia, Greece, and New Zealand. Serpentine can be confused with: Nephrite jade, Chlorite, Talc and Soapstone.
