Tumbled stones and chips are rocks and minerals that have been polished until their surfaces become smooth.

They come in a variety of shapes and sizes - chips indicate smaller pieces while tumbles, palm stones, freeforms and gallettes are much larger.

Rocks and minerals that have been polished until their surfaces become smooth are called tumbled stones. Suitable 'rough' stones are tumbled in process that can take several weeks in a 'rock tumbler'.

 

This transformation often helps turn the stones into bright, colourful and often beautiful pieces. Sometimes additional treatments such as dyes and heat are used to enhance existing colours or patterns.

 

Note: roughs with a hardness between 5 and 8 on the Mohs scale are most suited to tumbling. Stones that are too hard don't polish as well and stones that are softer don't endure the process of tumbling.
