TYPES OF STAINLESS STEEL
- 409 stainless is one of the cheaper stainless steels, it is more corrosion-prone than 304 stainless steel, and more vulnerable to surface rust. Speckles of rust mean a metal can't be sterilised, so this grade is not used for food. However, it's magnetic and has excellent strength and thermal properties. It is primarily used in automotive, manufacturing and construction.
- 316 stainless contains a minimum 2 percent molybdenum which makes it much more corrosion resistant than 304. However, as molybdenum is a more expensive element, it also generally makes 316 more expensive.
- 304 stainless or 18/8 is much more corrosion resistant than 304. It's non-magnetic, is strong, durable and recyclable. It has many applications, including most commercial kitchenware, cookware, indoor architectural detailing, food manufacturing, and fasteners. We prefer to use 304 grade that is nickel, lead and cadmium free.
- 216 stainless steel is an inexpensive grade of metal.
